Trekkers who take the Lemosho Route spend two days hiking through the rainforest on Kili’s lower western slopes, and then cross the spectacular Shira Plateau to join with other climbers taking the southern section of the Machame Route.
Lemosho trekkers enjoy all the scenic highlights of the Machame Route and then some… Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Shira Plateau and the Karanga Valley… terrain and climates including desert, rainforest and glacier… views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Plus, Lemosho offers a couple of days without the higher traffic of the more popular routes… and the best opportunity for altitude acclimatization of any route on the mountain.
There are also two summit options… Arrow Glacier/Crater Camp or Barafu Hut (see the map, above).
Lemosho is a long and difficult route, but boasts a very good summit-success rate and plenty of rewards. It is a good choice for fit, confident trekkers who are happy to walk further and be better acclimatized for their Kili experience.
Lemosho can be completed in 7 or 8 days.
